On the internet, identities are of utmost importance. Who you are online and how much information you give out is a serious topic. There have been many cases where people prefer not to give out their actual name, but they are not allowed to for several reasons. I personally think that this is wrong. If someone doesn’t want to give their actual name, I believe they shouldn’t have to (depending on the case in question).
Websites such as Facebook ask you to give them your legal name so that they can register you into their website. This is acceptable. Your name is basically your username and that is how people will find you. This website is for sharing information with your friends and family. Obviously, there is the option to accept or deny a friend request from someone so your privacy is very well protected.
There are other websites online that force you to give out your real name to the world when it is not necessary. For example, websites in China are forcing authors to give out their real names when they publish their work. This could be very bad for the author because many times they like to write things anonymously and they would like to keep it that way for privacy reasons. I believe they should have the right to do so if they want.
Many times, people choose to keep their identity private because of safety reasons. There have been cases where website users actually get into some serious trouble. This is most common in young users, where people try to kidnap them because they don’t know any better and they go along with it.
In conclusion, I believe that on some websites it is acceptable to give out your real name because you actually want people to know who you are. Other websites that need more privacy ask for your real name and I strongly believe that is wrong and people should have the privacy that they want.
